EU Provides €5M Humanitarian Aid to Nagorno-Karabakh

The European Union announced, this Tuesday, September 26, humanitarian aid of five million euros for Nagorno-Karabakh, a separatist region of Azerbaijan with an Armenian majority. Recently taken over by the country, its population is fleeing by the thousands to neighboring Armenia.

To support the population of Nagorno-Karabakh, the European Union announced humanitarian aid of five million euros this Tuesday, September 26. In detail, this concerns 500,000 euros of emergency aid planned last week, to which is added 4.5 million euros of new financing.

These sums should in particular make it possible to provide support to people taking refuge in Armenia, whose number has reached 13,500 and which is expected to increase further, with a massive exodus of Armenians from Nagorno-Karabakh being probable. The aid will primarily take the form of financial assistance, but also food and material assistance.

“We must be ready to support the thousands of people who have decided to flee Nagorno-Karabakh, especially since the next winter is likely to expose refugees to additional difficulties,” declared Janez Lenarčič, Commissioner. European Crisis Management. The objective is also to support at least 60,000 people remaining in Nagorno-Karabakh, where a food shortage as well as a lack of access to water and electricity have been noted.

After a war with Azerbaijan in 2020, the Armenian enclave had already lost three quarters of its territory. In the space of a one-day blitzkrieg from September 19 to 20, Azerbaijani forces completely regained control of the region.
