Morocco-EU: Start of political consultations a few days after the opinion of the CJEU prosecutor

The former French ambassador, Hélène Le Gal, returns to Morocco, a country she knew so well before her hasty departure. Today, she visited the Kingdom in her European garb as Director General for the Middle East and North Africa at the European External Action Service (EEAS).

On Monday, she spoke with the Ambassador, Director General of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Fouad Yazourh, as part of a new session of political consultations between Morocco and the European Union. A meeting which took place in the presence of several senior diplomats from the Moroccan side and the EU ambassador in Rabat, Patricia Lombart.

“During this meeting, discussions focused on the bilateral agenda and political issues of common interest,” indicates a laconic press release from Moroccan diplomacy.

This meeting comes a few days after the publication of the opinion of the Advocate General of the Court of Justice of the European Union on the fishing and agricultural agreements which are the subject of appeals submitted to the judicial body including the final verdict is decisive. The Advocate General, it should be remembered, pleaded for the confirmation of the first instance decision annulling the fishing agreement. On the other hand, she pleaded for maintaining the agricultural agreement.

The legal outcome of this case should have consequences on the future of cooperation between Morocco and the EU, which are continuing discussions on future prospects.

As a reminder, Hélène Le Gal, who works under the authority of the Head of European Diplomacy, Josep Borrell, works within the framework of the European External Action Service (EEAS). Which provided a report confirming that the populations of the Sahara benefit from the economic partnership agreements signed between Morocco and the EU.
