Estonia Bans Russian-Registered Vehicles

After Lithuania and Latvia, and in accordance with European sanctions, Estonia prohibits entry into its territory of any vehicle registered in Russia.

The measure has already been taken by Lithuania and Latvia and follows the last phase of sanctions adopted by the European Commission on September 8.

Apart from diplomatic vehicles, the ban is valid whatever the reason for the stay.

Lauri Läänemets, Estonian Interior Minister: “So far there are no differences. At the border, cars with Russian Federation license plates will all be returned. The Commission will not did not make a distinction, or our interpretation does not make it today. If problems arise and the European Union declares that there is indeed a problem, for example in the case of a Ukrainian, the question may be examined separately in the future, but ultimately everything that comes from Russia is sanctioned.”

The head of Estonian diplomacy also specifies that “the objective of the sanctions against Russia is to force the aggressor country to withdraw”.
