EU Ambassador Visits Alan Ganoo: Diplomacy Unfolds

The deepening of the trade agreement between the two bodies was at the center of the discussions.

The Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Ambassador of the European Union (EU) and Head of Delegation to Mauritius, Vincent Degert, paid a farewell visit to Alan Ganoo, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Regional Integration and International Trade, in Port-Louis, Thursday, July 20.

In a statement after the meeting, Ambassador Vincent Degert said discussions with the Foreign Minister focused on the EU’s four-year partnership with the foreign affairs sector. “I think we did a great job and maintained a great partnership with the Minister and his team to deal with the various emergencies that we had to deal with, such as the COVID-19 pandemic, the MV Wakashio oil spill and the Financial Action Task Force on Money Laundering,” he detailed.

In addition, the EU Ambassador pointed out that the conversations covered all the files under the responsibility of the Minister of Foreign Affairs, such as maritime security and the fight against drug and arms trafficking on the high seas.

Vincent Degert underlined that the EU and the line ministry have the potential to collaborate, and therefore the discussions focused on deepening our trade agreement, given that trade between Mauritius and the EU is doing very well. “As Mauritius exports a significant portion of its products to the European market, we would like to work on factors that could contribute to improving the conditions and the situation, such as phytosanitary standards and customs legislation,” he insisted.
