Tunisian Diplomat Hosts European Economy Commissioner

The Tunisian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Nabil Ammar, received this Monday at the headquarters of his department in Tunis, Paolo Gentiloni, European Commissioner for the Economy.

Mr. Gentiloni is on a visit to Tunisia, where he will have meetings with Tunisian leaders, including the head of government, Najla Bouden.

Quoted in a press release published by his department on the occasion, the head of Tunisian diplomacy called on the European side to show more understanding in this particular phase that Tunisia is going through, as well as to adopt a responsible and constructive discourse, which reflects the reality of the situation and appreciates what has been achieved for true democracy and a fairer and more inclusive mode of development, which meets the expectations of Tunisians.

Mr. Ammar took this opportunity to welcome the excellent level of partnership described as strategic between Tunisia and the European Union. “Tunisia is counting on its own resources and on the economic and financial support of its partners, in particular the European Union, for the success of its process of political, economic and social reforms”, he declared.

As for the European official, he hailed the quality of the existing partnership between Europe and Tunisia, while expressing the readiness of the European party “to continue its support for Tunisia, whether bilaterally or in the framework of its relations with the International Monetary Fund (IMF)”.

The question of irregular migration was also one of the main issues raised during this meeting. The two parties underlined the imperative of resorting to a global approach which takes into consideration the dual economic and social dimension of this scourge.
