Decision of the Constitutional Council: The position taken by the European Union

The European Union on Friday urged “all parties” in Senegal to respect the decision of the Constitutional Council invalidating the day before President Macky Sall’s decision to postpone the presidential election scheduled for the end of February.

Nabila Massrali, spokesperson for the head of European diplomacy Josep Borrell, declared: “The EU calls on all parties to respect this decision and to do everything possible to organize the elections in accordance with the Council decision, it is that is to say as soon as possible. She recalled that the EU had already expressed its concerns regarding the announcement of the postponement to December 15, 2024 of the presidential election initially scheduled for February 25.

The significant impact of this “deferral decision on the stability and social cohesion of the country” was underlined by the spokesperson during a press briefing. She also expressed the EU’s regret for the deaths of at least three people during protests in several cities in Senegal, as well as for the large number of injuries and arrests.

“Like the United Nations, the European Union calls for investigations and condemns unnecessary and disproportionate use of force against demonstrations as well as restrictions on civic space. We therefore call for transparency on the circumstances of the deaths of these people and urge the authorities to guarantee fundamental freedoms, in particular the freedom to demonstrate peacefully,” she concluded.
