The European Union (EU) has voiced serious concerns over violent clashes that erupted in the Serbian Parliament on Tuesday. The incident involved the use of smoke bombs, eggs, and water bottles, leaving several people injured.
A spokesperson for EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas issued a statement on Wednesday, condemning the disruption of parliamentary proceedings. “We are deeply concerned about the interruptions to parliamentary work and the violence inside the Parliament. The Parliament should remain a space for democratic debate in the interest of all citizens and must fully perform its role,” the spokesperson emphasized.
The EU also raised concerns over recent incidents targeting civil society organizations in Serbia. “Civil society plays a crucial role in fostering a democratic and pluralistic society,” the spokesperson added.
The statement reiterated the EU’s long-standing demand for de-escalation of tensions. “We have consistently called for inclusive dialogue involving all stakeholders—political actors, institutions, and civil society—to implement necessary reforms for Serbia’s future within the EU,” the spokesperson stressed.
Serbian Parliament Erupts in Chaos
On Tuesday, violent clashes broke out inside the Serbian Parliament between lawmakers from the ruling Serbian Progressive Party (SNS) and opposition members. The altercation saw the use of smoke bombs, eggs, and water bottles, leading to multiple injuries, according to local media reports.
Parliament Speaker Ana Brnabic condemned the opposition, branding them a “terrorist gang.” She claimed that three SNS lawmakers were seriously injured in the chaos.
Brnabic further stated that “MP Jasmina Obradovic’s life is in danger after suffering a stroke caused by a stun grenade hitting her head.”
The incident highlights the deepening political tensions in Serbia, where opposition groups have accused President Aleksandar Vucic’s government of authoritarian tendencies.
The EU’s concerns come at a crucial time as Serbia seeks to advance its bid for EU membership. However, continued unrest and attacks on civil society may hinder the country’s European aspirations.
