European Union: Apple prepares to split the App Store in two

The deadline is approaching: it is March 6, 2024 that Apple will have to comply with the provisions of European legislation on digital markets, the famous DMA which requires it to open the iPhone to third-party App Stores and payment methods. alternatives as well as sideloading, which consists of installing applications downloaded outside of any official platform. Although we have not yet had any communication on the subject from Apple, Cupertino developers are preparing the necessary changes to bring the App Store into compliance. According to Mark Gurman on Bloomberg, Apple is preparing to “split the App Store in two” with a European version and another for the rest of the world.

Apple has not included the upcoming changes in the beta version of iOS 17.3, the final version of which should be released by the end of January or beginning of February. Unless there are any surprises, it should therefore be for the following update with iOS 17.4 which will enter beta version just after. We should then see more clearly how Apple will comply with the new European legislation.
