A European civil-military mission in the Gulf of Guinea

Despite the disappointments recorded in Mali, Burkina Faso and Niger with the succession of coups d’etat, the European Union is planning a new mission in Africa.

According to information from the German daily ‘Welt am Sonntag’, the EU countries have agreed to launch a civil-military mission in the Gulf of Guinea in the autumn, immediately after a formal vote by the Ministers of Foreign Affairs EU Foreign Affairs at their October meeting in Luxembourg.

Police and soldiers, the number of which has not yet been defined, will be deployed in Côte d’Ivoire, Ghana, Togo and Benin to fight terrorism.

According to the crisis operation concept already finalized, the mission pursues four objectives, a general reinforcement of the security forces, in particular in the north of the four countries, through advice and training, specific training for counter-terrorist operations , technical assistance.

The concern of the European Union is that jihadist groups do not extend their activities to the coastal countries of the southern Gulf of Guinea and that instability is even greater.

The governments of Benin and Ghana have already sent the letter of invitation necessary for the stay of Europeans for the mission, specifies the newspaper.

The EU has not confirmed the information published by Welt am Sonntag.
