Bolstering Kyiv: Washington’s Battlefield Support

The United States on Tuesday announced a new tranche of military aid to Ukraine amounting to $400 million.

The aid includes ammunition for the Patriot air defense systems and HIMARS rocket launchers, as well as Stinger missiles, artillery ammunition, armored vehicles and other equipment from US stockpiles, according to a statement from the Ministry of defense.

It must serve to “strengthen the courageous Ukrainian forces on the battlefield” and “help them retake territories” occupied by Russian forces, assures the head of American diplomacy, Antony Blinken, in a separate press release, denouncing by elsewhere the Russian strikes targeting the strategic port of Odessa.

After its mid-July withdrawal from a deal on the export of Ukrainian grain, Russia began shelling port areas in the Odessa region.

This announcement of a new tranche of aid comes in the midst of a counter-offensive by the Ukrainian army, which is trying to repel Russian forces in the east and south of the country.

Since the start of the war in February 2022, the United States, which has led an international coalition in support of Ukraine, has provided more than $43 billion in military aid to Kyiv.
