EU’s Turkey Rapprochement: Update & Analysis

The 27 European Foreign Ministers are currently meeting in Brussels with a heavy agenda. In particular, they must consider four-year military aid of 20 billion euros for Ukraine. They will also launch debates on rapprochement with Turkey.

The rapprochement is a direct result of the war in Ukraine, since it was Russian aggression that pushed Sweden to apply for NATO membership and thus led Turkey to set the condition for the relaunch of negotiations with the European Union (EU).

The Turkish demand for a relaunch of negotiations satisfies some Europeans like Germany. She sees it as an opportunity to reflect strategically on relations with a “difficult, but important” neighbor, in the words of Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock. The head of European diplomacy, Josep Borrell, had already advocated the geopolitical need to get along with Turkey after the re-election of Recep Tayyip Erdogan two months ago.
