Sahara Consultations: Staffan de Mistura Engages EU

The Personal Envoy of the United Nations Secretary General for the Sahara, Sataffan de Mistura, has resumed his consultations, holding a new meeting with officials from the MENA region of European countries. A meeting dedicated to a briefing on the situation in the Sahara.

After having denied any hint of resignation, the Personal Envoy of the United Nations Secretary General for the Sahara, Staffan de Mistura, resumed his activities with application.

Unable to advance the political process, the UN envoy is continuing his talks and consultations with all the parties concerned. Now it is the turn of European diplomacy.

In Stockholm, De Mistura met, on May 31, with the directors of the MENA Region of the countries of the European Union. During this meeting, organized by the EU Diplomatic Service, he gave a briefing on the progress of the file. The choice of Sweden, it should be remembered, is explained by the fact that this country is currently the rotating president of the EU.

“Meeting of EU Directors for the MENA region in Stockholm today. One of the highlights was the briefing by Staffan de Mistura, Personal Envoy of the Secretary-General for the Sahara, on his ongoing diplomatic efforts,” Tobias Tunkel, MENA Director at the German Foreign Ministry, said in a tweet. .

It should be noted that this meeting was attended by the former French ambassador to Morocco, Hélène Le Gal, who now holds the position of “Director General for the Middle East and North Africa” within the European diplomacy.

So far, Staffan de Mistura is working with all his energy to relaunch the round table process, despite the categorical refusal of Algeria and the Polisario who persist in obstructing the relaunch of this scheme launched by his predecessor, Horst Köhler.

The resumption of round tables with the participation of all stakeholders remains, however, a sine qua non condition for the revival of political dialogue. Morocco demands the presence of Algiers, considered the real part of the conflict.

For its part, the Security Council also demands the resumption of the round tables as stipulated in resolution 2654. The text, voted on last October 27, asked “again to Morocco, to the POLISARIO Front, to Algeria and to the Mauritania to cooperate more intensively with each other, including through further confidence-building, and with the United Nations”.
