The winner of the European Union Prize for Literature (EUPL) 2023 will be announced today at the Leipzig Book Fair.

Today, the winner of the European Union Prize for Literature (EUPL) 2023 will be announced at the LeipzigEN••• Book Fair. The names of the winners will be available online after 6:00 p.m. For this year’s edition, emerging authors from 13 countries will be nominated, and an international jury will choose one winner and five special mentions based on the literary achievements of their books and their potential to cross borders.

Commissioner for Innovation, Research, Culture, Education and Youth, Mariya Gabriel, said: “Books are very close to my heart. That’s why I launched European Authors’ Day this year, and today is another great opportunity to celebrate European literature. I extend my warm congratulations to the winner of the European Union Prize for Literature in 2023, and to the five authors who received a mention! Your work reflects the talent and creativity of the European literary scene. I look forward to delving into your books, and I hope many other readers will do the same. »

Since 2009, the award recognizes emerging contemporary fiction writers from the 41 countries participating in the Creative Europe programme. Each year, national organizations from one-third of participating countries nominate potential winning novels, allowing all countries and language areas to be represented over a three-year cycle. This year, the participating countries are Armenia, Croatia, Cyprus, Czechia, Estonia, Finland, France, Kosovo, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Montenegro, Poland and Sweden.

The EUPL is organized by a Consortium of Associations comprising the Federation of European Publishers (FEP) and the European and International Booksellers Federation (EIBF). The prize is funded by the Creative Europe program of the European Union, which aims to promote the cross-border mobility of people working in the cultural sector, to encourage the transnational circulation of cultural and artistic production and to foster intercultural dialogue.
