The High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borrell, rejected a request from Green MEPs calling on the EU to interfere in the Sahara issue.
Some MEPs do not seem satisfied to have involved the European Parliament in a relentless campaign against Morocco, and want more. In a letter sent last December to the European Commission, the Spanish MEP, Ana Miranda, from the Greens group, known for her support for the Polisario, pleaded for the creation of a task force on the Sahara within the European External Action Service. A request rejected by the Head of European diplomacy, Josep Borrell who, in correspondence, indicated that “no modification of the organization chart is planned”.
“Developments in the Sahara are followed by the division of the European External Action Service for relations with the Maghreb countries and the respective services of the Commission”, explained Josep Borrell, underlining that “the position of the EU concerning the question of the Sahara is well known and remains unchanged”.
The European Union, let us recall, remains aligned with the UN process and calls for a negotiated political solution, in accordance with resolution 2654 of October 27, 2022. At the same time, nearly fourteen Member States, including Germany, Spain , Hungary, the Netherlands, France and Austria have shown their support for the autonomy plan.
