May 10, 2025 – European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has called for a ceasefire in Ukraine to be implemented without pre-conditions, warning that Moscow will face more sanctions if it breaches the truce.
“We support the proposal for a full and unconditional 30-day ceasefire. It must be implemented without pre-conditions to pave the way for meaningful peace negotiations,” von der Leyen said in a message posted on X (formerly Twitter).
Her comments came as the leaders of France, Germany, Britain, and Poland visited Kyiv to show solidarity with Ukraine and increase pressure on Moscow for a ceasefire. The EU chief emphasized that the responsibility now lies with Russia to decide the next steps.

“The ball is now in Russia’s court. We stand ready to maintain strong pressure on Russia and impose further biting sanctions in the event of a breach of a ceasefire,” she added.
The Kremlin has shown no signs of halting its invasion of Ukraine, despite US President Donald Trump’s calls for a ceasefire. Moscow has warned that there could be no truce unless the West stops supplying arms to Ukraine.
Von der Leyen stressed that the overarching goal is to establish a “just and lasting peace for Ukraine,” which would also be crucial for the security and stability of Europe as a whole.
