Chinese Foreign Minister meets US climate envoy in Beijing

BEIJING, Sept. 7 (Xinhua) — Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi met with John Podesta, a senior adviser to the U.S. president on international climate policy, in Beijing on Friday.

Wang, also a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, said this year marks the 45th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic ties between China and the United States.

Forty-five years of experience have shown that China and the United States should be partners rather than rivals, Wang said, adding that the two sides should promote each other’s success instead of engaging in fierce competition.

China is willing to work with the United States to follow the important consensus reached by the presidents of the two countries in San Francisco, find a correct path to get along as two major countries, and strive to develop healthy, stable and sustainable bilateral relations, Wang said.

Noting that China is committed to pursuing green, sustainable and low-carbon development, Wang Yi said that dialogue and cooperation on climate change is not only an integral part of bilateral relations, but also an important measure to implement the consensus reached by the heads of state of the two countries.

He noted that the two sides’ climate response teams have maintained close communication and achieved a series of pragmatic cooperation results this year, expressing the hope that the U.S. side will maintain policy stability, earnestly respect China’s concerns, avoid protectionism and excessive use of the security concept, and jointly address this global challenge with China.

Podesta said that cooperation on combating climate change is an important consensus reached by the heads of state of the two countries, a key element of U.S.-China relations and a matter of global multilateral cooperation.

The collaboration between the United States and China will not only benefit the people of the two countries, but also bring more benefits to the world, he said.

The U.S. side is willing to strengthen communication and coordination with China and engage in constructive cooperation, Podesta noted. End
