Far-right gets Commission vice-presidency

The media outlet, which claims to cite European diplomats and informed sources within the Commission, also indicates that the European Commissioner for Digital Affairs and French candidate Thierry Breton should be appointed executive vice-president in charge of industry and strategic autonomy.

Raffaele Fitto, current Italian Minister for European Affairs in the Meloni government, will be the first member of a far-right populist party to become executive vice-president of the Commission, claims “Die Welt”.

A former MEP and co-president of the European Conservatives and Reformists Group in the European Parliament, Raffaele Fitto is a loyalist of Giorgia Meloni, whose party, Brothers of Italy, he joined after having been for a time the rising star of Forza Italia, the conservative party of the former head of government and billionaire Silvio Berlusconi.

Other appointments

According to “Die Welt”, Ursula von der Leyen, re-elected in July, will appoint as other executive vice-presidents the Latvian Valdis Dombroviskis (enlargement and reconstruction of Ukraine) and the Spanish Teresa Ribera Rodriguez (transition).

The German media adds that the new European Commissioner for Energy should be the Czech Minister of Industry Jozef Sikela. The former Prime Minister of Estonia, Kaja Kallas, was chosen as head of EU diplomacy at the end of June.

Two European commissioners will also work directly with Ursula von der Leyen, explains “Die Welt”, according to which the president wants to make deregulation issues one of the major themes of her mandate. Slovakian Maros Sefcovic will be responsible for reducing bureaucracy and inter-institutional issues, while Polish Piotr Serafin will be in charge of budgetary matters, the daily reports.
