Warsaw would like to shoot down Russian missiles threatening it over Ukraine

Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski believes that Warsaw should have the right to shoot down Russian missiles already threatening its territory over neighboring Ukraine, in an interview with the Financial Times (FT) published on Monday.

The comments come a week after a “flying device” – probably a Russian drone of Iranian origin Shahed – entered the territory of Poland, a NATO member and staunch ally of kyiv, at the time of the massive Russian strikes in neighboring Ukraine. Lost by radar, the drone has still not been found. At least two other cases of Russian missiles entering Polish territory have been reported in the past by Warsaw.

On Monday, following a new wave of massive Russian strikes against Ukraine, the Polish Air Force once again scrambled its planes.

Ukraine shoots down missiles heading towards kyiv

Ukrainian air defenses shot down about 20 missiles heading towards kyiv on Sunday night, local authorities said, in an attack that left at least two people injured. In the city of Sumy, in the northeast of the country, a social and psychological support center for children and an orphanage were also hit by a Russian missile on Sunday evening, injuring 13 people, including four minors, according to the city’s mayor, Oleksandr Lysenko, on Telegram.

“Russian forces have carried out a new missile strike on kyiv. It combined cruise missiles (propelled during the entire flight phase, editor’s note) and ballistic missiles,” the Ukrainian capital’s civil and military administration said on Telegram. According to the source, the cruise missiles were fired from strategic bombers flying in the Russian region of Saratov and after performing “complex maneuvers” arrived in the direction of kyiv from the south.

“There will be an answer to everything. The enemy will feel it”

“The air defense forces destroyed more than a dozen cruise missiles and about a dozen ballistic missiles, and a drone in the airspace of the capital,” the source said. On Telegram, Kiev Mayor Vitali Klitschko said that two adults were injured and four cars caught fire after debris fell.

In two other districts of the capital, a fire in a boiler room was quickly extinguished, while another fire affected a company, the mayor said. “There will be an answer to everything. The enemy will feel it,” said Andrii Yermak, the head of the Ukrainian presidential office.

On the Russian side, during the night, the governor of the Belgorod region, Vyacheslav Gladkov, reported a Ukrainian airstrike that injured one person and damaged, among other things, a business and infrastructure in the city of Belgorod.

Putin says he will “take care” of Ukrainian “bandits”
Vladimir Putin assured Monday that he will “take care” of the Ukrainian soldiers on the offensive in the border region of Kursk, while welcoming that this operation could not “stop” the Russian advance in eastern Ukraine.
