Niger President’s Health Warning: European Council Cautions

European Council President Charles Michel warned that any further deterioration in the state of health of ousted Nigerian President Mohamed Bazoum would have “serious consequences” during an interview with Nigerian President Bola Tinubu.

This was stated by the spokesperson for the senior European official on Friday.

“President Bazoum, democratically elected, remains the legitimate head of state of Niger”, insisted Charles Michel.

“His conditions of detention are deteriorating. Any further deterioration in his state of health will have serious consequences,” he warned.

The spokeswoman did not provide further details.

Several representatives of regional and international organizations had expressed their concern about the conditions of detention and the state of health of the ousted president. The Chairperson of the African Union Commission, Moussa Faki Mahamat, had previously expressed “his serious concerns” about the “deterioration of the conditions of detention” of Mohamed Bazoum. UN Secretary General António Guterres also said he was “concerned” by “the deplorable conditions in which President Bazoum and his family would live”.

The European Union (EU) was alarmed by a “deterioration of the conditions of detention” of President Bazoum.

“The EU reiterates its deep concern at the deterioration of the conditions of detention of President Mohamed Bazoum and his family who, according to the latest information, have been deprived of food, electricity and healthcare for several days. We call once again for their immediate and unconditional release, ”said on X (ex-Twitter) the head of European diplomacy, Josep Borrell.

Sequestered in his presidential residence in Niamey since the military seized power on July 26, Mohamed Bazoum had received a visit from his personal doctor last Saturday, at a time when concerns about his health were increasing.

Nigerien President Mohamed Bazoum “is fine” and “has high morale”, said his personal doctor, quoted by Radio France internationale (RFI).
