ECOWAS Deploys Standby Force in Niger

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) ordered on Thursday August 10, 2023 the deployment of a “standby force” to restore order in Niger.
The Heads of State of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) gathered in Abuja, Nigeria for an extraordinary summit on Niger.

The negotiation with the junta in Niger must be the “foundation of our approach”, said Thursday in Abuja the President of Nigeria Bola Tinubu at the opening of a new ECOWAS summit on Niger. “It is crucial that we prioritize diplomatic negotiations and dialogue as the bedrock of our approach,” said Nigeria’s president, who holds the rotating presidency of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS). .

The head of the American diplomacy Antony Blinken declared that his country supported the action of the Economic Community of West African States concerning Niger, without however explicitly endorsing the decision to deploy its force. “ECOWAS, an organization that brings together West African countries, plays a vital role in demonstrating the need for a return to constitutional order and we support the leadership and work of ECOWAS in this area” , he said.

Paris supports “all the conclusions adopted” at the ECOWAS summit

France gave “its full support to all the conclusions” adopted at the summit of Heads of State of the Economic Community of West African States on Niger, which ordered the deployment of its “force waiting” to restore constitutional order.
