Belarus has handed Brazil a note confirming its intention to become a member of the BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa) group, Belarusian diplomacy said.
Belarusian Ambassador to Brazil Sergei Lukachevitch informed the authorities of the Latin American country about Minsk’s intention to join the BRICS group, the press service of the Belarusian Foreign Ministry reported.
The diplomat met with Brazilian Deputy Foreign Minister Maria Luisa Escorel de Moraes, the ministerial statement said. In particular, they discussed deliveries of Belarusian potash fertilizers to the Brazilian market as well as prospects for Minsk’s participation in Brazilian public programs for private farmers and family farms.
Earlier, India’s Business Standard daily, citing its own sources, reported that the upcoming BRICS summit in Johannesburg in August could see the induction of five new members – Argentina, Egypt, Indonesia, Arab Emirates United and Saudi Arabia.
At the end of January, the head of Belarusian diplomacy Sergei Aleïnik declared that Russia had declared itself ready to support his country if it wished to join the BRICS.
