In detail, in the morning, Jean Asselborn will take part in the meeting of Foreign Ministers, during which an in-depth discussion on the war led by Russia in Ukraine is planned. Among the main current issues on the program, the heads of European diplomacy will address the political situation in Tunisia, where NGOs and the main opposition parties have denounced an authoritarian drift by President Kaïs Saïed since the summer of 2021, the young democracy resulting from the first revolt of the Arab Spring in 2011 and while a Parliament with limited prerogatives has just been installed.
Defense Counterparts
In the afternoon, the ministers will be joined by their Defense counterparts. This enlarged session of the Foreign Affairs Council will be devoted to the implementation of the strategic compass, one year after its approval, as well as, more broadly, to EU support for Ukraine. Tonight and tomorrow, Minister François Bausch will take part in the first edition of the “Schuman Security and Defense Forum”. An event that will bring together the Ministers of Defense of the 27 Member States and 45 partner countries as well as international and regional organizations with which the EU cooperates in the field of security and defence.
